German-born American composer of mostly stage, orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal, piano, and organ works that have been performed throughout the world; he is also active as a conductor. Prof. Adler is the son of cantor-composer Hugo Adler, who moved the family to the USA in 1939. He studied violin with Albert Levy as a child and later studied composition with Herbert Fromm and Hugo Norden at Boston University, where he earned his BMus in 1948.
